I was asked to write this column last night to give the people of Newtown some sense that we at the Register feel for their immense pain and grief. It's really hard to write a column when you can't identify with what the other person is going through. So I wrote about what I was going through. I hope you connect with it.

I have found this holiday season that I really have needed to make some major changes in how I approach my life in order to keep some semblance of serenity.

(And I don’t say “holiday season” as some politically correct way to avoid “Christmas.” This started before Thanksgiving, but the “Christmas season” has definitely turned up the pressure.)

I don’t know exactly why, but this has been a very difficult fall, and the idea of shopping and the over-commercialization of Christmas has really been tough to take this year.

I don’t know exactly why, but I do know some of the reasons:

Sandy. I did not suffer from that horrible storm, other than to lose a small tree that would have been taken down when they resided our condo. In fact, we got to stay at my sister’s house and were fed well. My bond with Susan and Tony only grew stronger. But I know that many people went through hell and I feel for them.

The election. No matter which side you were on, maybe you agree with me that the lack of concern for Americans’ welfare was discouraging.

The economy. I know an awful lot of people without jobs. I’m trying to avoid adding the “fiscal cliff” to the list, but it has the ability to terrify me. I’ve been laid off. I empathize too easily.

Illness. I’m healthy, thank God. But I have too many friends and family members who have been dealing with some real tough stuff.

My son’s in college. I don’t understand it, but I miss him terribly and I don’t want to go to shopping malls to compensate.

Don’t misunderstand me. I’m feeling incredibly grateful about my life, my wonderful wife and son, my extended family, my friends, my job, my health. Those are the things I’ve turned to this year to make it a season to really celebrate.

This is why I’m writing this column at all.

Every year we say we’ll simplify our celebration, and usually we do. We don’t go crazy with expensive gifts, except maybe something special for our son. But it seems that a real change of heart is needed this year, at least for me.

Here’s what I’ve done so far to make this a season of, if not joy, at least serenity:

I’ve gone to a couple of Christmas concerts, ones in which I know people who are singing: there was Shoreline Soul in Madison, an annual gospel workshop; and the Cantabile Vocal Quartet, a fine group, which was joined by the Bel Canto Choir of West Haven High School, led by my friend Phyllis Silver, musical director at WHHS.

This isn’t something just anyone can do, but I also went to my 40th high school reunion. All that materialistic crap meant nothing as we gave each other hugs and caught up.

I’ve been going to church, something I haven’t done that much of in the last two years, for complicated reasons. It’s one of the ways I’ve been able to spend more time with my wife.

I’ve had lunch with friends and, believe it or not, made more phone calls. I’ve called friends and family just to check in. I’ve texted my son just to tell him I love him.

We’ve increased our giving to charity.

None of this is fancy. All of this could be considered obvious. But it still has taken effort to do it.

Please, in the remaining days before New Year’s Eve, do some of these things. There are so many events—concerts, art shows, the Fantasy of Lights … just do something for your soul. Strengthen that bond with a family member or friend.

I’m not saying not to shop. The economy needs it. Spend what you can without overextending yourself. But don’t let it stop there. Make a connection. Be good to yourself.

Share with me the ways you are making this Christmas, calm, wholesome and peaceful. Post them here and we’ll print them in the Register.

Have a peaceful holiday!

(This column will also appear in the New Haven Register on Dec. 13.)
Just
read you column Ed and, with all sincerity, I think it's great. Feeling
much the same way myself. My son was in a junior choir holiday concert
yesterday at his Catholic school, my family lit the candles on the
Advent wreath in church last Sunday, the kids are both in Brass City
Ballet's "Nutcracker" this weekend and my daughter will carry Baby Jesus
up to the altar during Xmas Eve Mass. All of that feels more impt. that
shopping and commercialization, especially this year.

Hi all,

Apologies to all for the lack of activity on this blog and on my Twitter account as well as the Your Open Newsroom account.

As I hope you've seen, we've just finished publishing a nine-part special section series about the Register's 200th anniversary, much of which we've posted on a Rebel Mouse site. Most of the labor has been for print, and when print deadlines loom, it's hard to focus on much else.

If you get the paper daily, you have the complete collection. We've traced the history of New Haven over the last 200 years, as well as the Register's, with photos of New Haven locations in the past and how they look today.

I also was a panelist on WNPR's "Where We Live" last week with the inestimable New Haven historians Jim Campbell of the New Haven Museum and city historian Judith Schiff of Yale. They are amazing people who know so much about this city. Unfortunately for us, Jim is retiring at the end of January, as Randy Beach wrote Sunday.

If you'd like to order a set, they cost $18.12 if you pick them up at the Register. Or you can have them shipped for a fee. Call 888-453-9995.

There were so many people who helped put this project together, including reporter Joe Amarante, who wrote several lead stories. Jim Campbell helped as well, especially with old photos, as did Allison Botelho of the New Haven Free Public Library. Both of those are celebrating anniversaries this year too: the museum is 150 and the library is 125!

Without two people, however, the project would never have gotten done with anywhere near the professionalism. For all I know, it wouldn't have gotten done at all! First, I have to thank our librarian, Angel Diggs (left), who spent hours in several libraries finding images of our front pages--no easy task for that early Columbian Register--as well as photos of our 200 prominent people. She is a total professional, but she went above and beyond on this project.

The other is Ann Dallas (below), one of our designers, who designed all 54 of the editorial pages. She's another totally wonderful person and it was great to work more closely with her on this.

Don't worry the project isn't over. We still have many of our 200 people to write about, and there's still a lot of New Haven history we haven't touched on. (If there's something you think we missed, let me know.) So keep in touch, watch this space, and let's get a start on another 200 years!

I asked you to tell me who’s doing positive things in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and you came through. While I know there are many more people helping each other than we’ve heard about, here are some good examples. It doesn’t take a heroic act to make a difference. The little things mean a lot. They show us that others care, that we’re not alone facing a world that can be pretty cold at times.

Edward Burke of West Haven was grateful to the city and to Living Word Ministries for how he fared in the storm. He’s 75 years old and requires a breathing apparatus. “They brought me up to Carrigan School” where he could use his machine, Burke said. “I got a cot, I got food” from Living Word, a church on Bull Hill Lane, “and they supplied food that quite frankly was better than most restaurants!”

Burke mentioned a woman named Kathy who worked 16 to 18 hours a day. “I think that people like her should be compensated somehow for it,” he said.

John Appel of Branford nominated his neighbor, Mike Labonia of Lanphier Road, who had a generator and two neighbors without power. “He solicited extension cords also and connected two women who otherwise whould have been without power and whose freezers would have been without power also,” Appel said.

On Facebook, Susan Lanzaro Schroeder told about “an elderly Derby neighbor handicapped with bedsores AND without power for five long days survived on an air mattress that was shot.” Schroeder said she learned about the situation Friday morning, posted it on the Valley Independent Sentinel and within 1½ hours “offers came pouring in to contact and assist this family. She is now safely ‘tucked in’ at a nursing home for the next week or so. People in need don't always reach out; but, there are people who feel urgent about helping!!!”

Sometimes there’s no single deed. Lubelia Bela DeBrum, also on Facebook, said that in her Milford condo complex, where one section was hit hard, “came together as a true community. We are not only nearest but we’re family.”

Even nonprofit agencies can be the recipients of kindness. The Connecticut Food Bank posted today, “There are so many people and organizations we want to thank. One is a woman from Orange, CT, who just got her power back on Sunday. She told us she spent her entire weekly food budget to help others. Another is a young man who rented a truck when he learned we needed help getting the food from West Hartford to our East Haven warehouse.”

There are many more stories out there. Tell us more … or better yet, write your own in the way you help others.

Boy, can we all use some good news right about now. How about this story, recounted by staff reporter Jennifer Swift:

Branford resident Lloyd Conlin realized last year during Tropical Storm Irene that he was lucky to have a generator — so he decided to extend his resources to others, and did the same after Hurricane Sandy hit.

Conlin extended a power cord to a bar table in front of his home at 1 Soundview Heights, inviting anyone to stop by and charge up.

“I bought this generator six years ago, I never had to use it — ever. Then along came a girl named Irene,” he said. “I figured someone else could use the power too.”

Conlin, who owns Lenny’s Indian Head Inn, said people have taken him up on it. After Sandy, a boy stopped by, plugged in a hand-held gaming device, sat down on the sandbags and played games for a half hour.

“Just for one kid playing a game, being happy, that made it worth it,” he said.

If you look closely, you can always find breaks of sunlight in the storm clouds. Believe it or not, journalists like these positive stories just as much as anyone else. Here are just a few of the random acts of kindness we’ve heard so far.

Kenneth Richards wrote on Facebook, “In West Haven by Pagels School and Ora Mason Library there is a group of children coming to (your) door and giving (you) candy!!! What an act of kindness and bravo (to) the parents!!!”

Nicole Barnes, also in West Haven, described how her fiancé helped West Shore Fire Department volunteers cut down a tree that was leaning against an elderly resident’s front door. “The three of them rocked it to help out that sweet woman and her daughter,” Barnes wrote. “The West Shore FD has some wonderful firemen working for them and this was just one small thing I saw today that I had to share.”

And in Milford, Joe Della Monica offered: “If any of my friends need to shower, power up phones, lap tops, warm bed or hot meal, stop over!!!

Several businesses offered free food, including Rainbow Gardens in Milford and Miya Sushi in New Haven and many more offered to serve as charging stations. There’s a list of places offering free meals at our Elm City Express blog.

Now we want to hear from you. Have you heard of any “hometown heroes” or random acts of kindness? Email me at estannard@nhregister.com, post them on the New Haven Register’s Facebook page or call me at 203-789-5743. Let’s let some sunlight shine through these overcast days!
They came; they transformed our 40-year-old building. Then, suddenly, they were gone.

City-Wide Open Studios’ Alternative Weekend hit the New Haven Register building this past weekend. Our presses, silent since we moved our printing to Hartford, became easels for paintings and photographs. The rooms where we used to bundle the papers to send them to carriers and where we used to insert advertising were reborn as exhibit halls for immense sculptures, jewelers, videographers and other visual artists.

Left behind: An artist added labels to the press controls.

Old honor boxes, many of them retired because they were dented in the line of duty, were used as part of the exhibit.

Many of them, like the woman who made artificial flowers out of old Registers, or the one who remade the control panel from the press, based their artwork on the Register’s legacy of newspaper publishing.

“It was a fantastic weekend,” said Helen Kauder, executive director of Artspace New Haven, which sponsors the three-weekend CWOS event. “We were really thrilled and many, many people told me on the way out that they thought it was the best alternative space in our history.”

She said about 1,900 people attended the Alternative Space on Saturday and Sunday, which was more than the last couple of years, when the space was smaller, but probably larger than when the Winchester or Pirelli buildings served as the exhibit hall.

It kind of felt like an invading army at times.

Kauder said the Register’s history and the massive presses inspired many of the artists. “Using what was there as platforms, as a canvas … there was so much to inspire.” Industrial buildings like ours have “these peculiar, quirky places — kind of nooks within the factory,” which gave the artists a lot of choices to set up their work.

The fate of the building — originally built as the Gant shirt-making factory — also elicited questions. “A lot of people were curious to know what’s going to happen with the building. It certainly generated a lot of wonder and curiosity.”

For the record, the building is still for sale and the 13-acre property has been rezoned so it can be used for retail. Once it sells, the Register staff will move to an undetermined location downtown.

One of those who attended, Brian Robinson of New Haven, said the exhibit went “well beyond my expectations. … I had never been in the Register building. It was a perfect venue.” His three children, 9 and under, “were totally taken with it,” Robinson said.

Jerry Zigmont of Madison said, “I thought it was pretty wonderful. We didn’t know what to expect … and not being familiar with the space it was a total surprise to us.”

He said he appreciated “the fact that a lot of the artists incorporated some of the actual physical pieces … into their own art.”

And then, as quickly as they came, they were gone. The press is unadorned, the back rooms empty. It was a glorious transformation that adds to the rich history of 40 Sargent Drive.
Learn to use online crowdsourcing platforms on Oct. 17 in a lunchtime panel sponsored by The Arts Council of Greater New Haven.

Shola Cole, the Arts Council’s coordinator of community programs, has organized this panel because (relatively) new platforms like Kickstarter are amazingly effective, are getting ever-more popular, and are a great way to fund projects with a creative and community-minded approach.

The event will take place on from noon to 1 p.m. at The New Haven Institute Library, 847 Chapel St., New Haven. The event costs $15 for the general public and $10 for students and Arts Council members. Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch. Refreshments and healthy snacks will be provided.

The panel will share insights and experiences with crowdsourcing through Kickstarter, Indiegogo and GoFundMe. Topics covered will include media format, message, identifying community need, and promoting the platform. The event will also allow for audience feedback and questions.

The event will be moderated by New Haven-based actor, producer, writer, and social media entrepreneur, Christian Shaboo, who is a dream director with The Future Project. Panelists include Ben Berkowitz (Inside Out & ClickSeeFund), Jen Vickery (108 Monkeys & Elm City Flow), Bert Bernardi (Pantochino Productions) and others.

For more information, and to reserve a spot, please contact the Arts Council at 203-772-2788 or email Cole at scole@newhavenarts.com.

(Because the Institute Library is not wheelchair accessible, a live feed will be broadcast in the Community Program Room on the lower level of the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St.
NEW HAVEN — In the past couple of weeks, we’ve been asking you who you think are the most prominent 200 people from Greater New Haven over the last two centuries. The project is part of the Register’s ongoing 200th-anniversary celebration, which will hit its peak in December.

We’ve gotten some great names: Artie Shaw, the band leader, Robert Moses, who transformed the New York cityscape, Emma Ruff, New Haven’s first black high school teacher. Keep those names coming!

As it turns out, we’re not the only ones interested in celebrating those people who have made New Haven and its surrounding towns such a vibrant, exciting place to live. If you wander around the upper Chapel Street area, between York Street and Sherman Avenue, you’ll see a number of banners celebrating “New Haven Notables.”

The banners include actors Paul Giamatti and Patricia Smith (who were born here) and Meryl Streep (who first starred at Yale), boxer Chad Dawson and Red Sox player Craig Breslow (in an Oakland A’s uniform, two teams ago), Rev. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, civil rights activist Adam Clayton Powell and others. They are the product of the Chapel West Special Services District.

“Our district is in the middle of the arts center of Yale,” said Vincent Romei, president of the district, referring to the schools of Art and Architecture and the museums on Chapel Street. That’s one reason the district decided to post the banners, which are on the sides of both privately owned and public buildings, mostly on Chapel, Park and Howe streets.

The criteria to be included: “They should be born in New Haven or at least developed their career in New Haven. There’s only like one or two that were not born in New Haven … but the Yale connection goes a long way.”
The large banners with drawings and biographies of city “notables” are not the only ones the district has put up. “We’ve had not only these banners but merchants have banners all throughout our district … and we recently put up street banners (with) a history of how they (the streets) got their names,” Romei said.
They’re among the projects the district undertakes to increase the area’s quality of life. “We do what the city doesn’t have time to do or can’t get to,” he said.
It’s great that we’re not the only ones who want to celebrate people from New Haven. And we’re still interested in your nominations. Send them to me at estannard@nhregister.com or give me a call at 203-789-5743.

NEW HAVEN — A really exciting event in local journalism happened recently — exciting because of the new voices that are out there.

Now it’s time for the rest of us to hear.

High school journalism students from High School in the Community and James Hillhouse High School are combining efforts on the site, called The Pulse, at www.newhavenpulse.com. Their mission: to change the perception of New Haven teens by writing stories and columns about issues that are important to them. Other schools may join them soon, according to HSC teacher Matt Presser.

Journalism students at High School in the Community have launched The Pulse, a website by and for teens. “I think that teenagers get a very bad rep in New Haven because of a lot of the drama that’s going on and I hope with this website that we can bring awareness that not all kids are like that and that we shouldn’t all be categorized as that,” said Laura Coppola, 17, of Hamden, an HSC student.

The website is already loaded with content, including opinion columns about the Hillhouse grade-tampering scandal, news about HSC’s new structure that eliminates ninth- through 12th-grade levels and even poetry.

“I think we’re really trying to change the dominant narrative about what it is to be a teenager here” in New Haven, said Presser. “Who better to tell that story than the people who are having that experience themselves?”

“The reason I joined journalism is to give black teens a voice because I feel like the generation now is not doing anything productive,” said Cheyenne Rogers, 17, of West Haven. “So to do these articles I feel like I’m showing black teens something different that they can do instead of going around here and hurting each other and committing crimes and everything.”

The website also helps connect students across the city. “It was cool to see my students get on (the website) today and see some of the stories the students at Hillhouse wrote,” Presser said.

One of our charges at the Register, through our Community Media Lab and in other ways, is to support the diverse voices of our community. We’ll be helping promote the students who publish The Pulse by linking to their stories from our website and having them shadow our reporters. We’re even planning to hold a news meeting at High School in the Community.

“I think the website shows the students’ ability, that they are beginning to understand journalism, and the site reflects their hard work and dedication,” said Shahid Abdul-Karim, the Register’s New Haven education reporter.

“I think our partnership will give them the opportunity to get the hands-on experience that they will need to further their education.”

I expect to learn as much from the teens as we can teach them. The students at High School in the Community are certainly ready to tell us what they think about the issues they face.

“They think because they’re adults that we think like they think … but our mindset is totally different,” said Briana Heath, 16, of New Haven.

“It’s a different time from when our parents were teenagers,” said Laura Coppola, 17, of Hamden.

Some of their issues are as serious as any an adult deals with. “I joined journalism to talk about teen pregnancy, because a lot of parents tell you not to have sex and to have protected sex but people still do it and teens are still not going to listen,” said Heath, who recommended “teen pregnancy classes and parenting classes inside the school.”

Tyshawn Lowery, 17, of New Haven is interested in looking into cyberbullying, which he called “a huge, huge problem. I’ve heard of lots of deaths due to cyberbullying, and it’s just wrong, because if you won’t say it to someone’s face, then why post it online?” Lowery also plans to post his poetry on the site.

Charnese Shabazz, 16, of New Haven, is looking closer to home. “I’m writing about how … pretty much everybody, but high school mostly, how they segregate themselves. Like if you go into our cafeteria right now you’d see the Hispanics at one table, the blacks at one table and then the whites in the corner but you just see different races categorized and I’m wondering why we just don’t mix it up and that’s what I’m writing about now.”

Through The Pulse, these students will make sure their voices are heard. And we at the Register plan to help amplify those voices to make sure they’re heard.

NEW HAVEN — As the New Haven Register looks forward to selling our 42-year-old plant and moving downtown, the old newspaper plant and shirt factory is going to be host for one last extravaganza.

Artspace’s annual Alternative Space Weekend, part of the City-Wide Open Studios Festival, will be staged in the Register’s Long Wharf building Oct. 20-21. More than 100 artists will bring their work — and create new works inspired by the space — to our press room and other areas where we once printed, folded and bundled the paper for delivery.

“We’re going to be inviting artists to exhibit and create work in the factory parts of the building,” said Helen Kauder, executive director of Artspace New Haven. The artists will use “six or seven of the spaces that were used for printing and to put together the paper.”

That will include the press room, which has a high ceiling and walking areas on two levels. Artspace will install “innovative hanging systems that will be set up so that artists can hang their work,” Kauder said.

While we stopped printing the paper in our Long Wharf Drive plant earlier this year (it’s now printed by the Hartford Courant), the news, advertising, circulation and business operations are still there as we await a buyer. Recently, the city rezoned the area to allow for a retail business.

When artists look at a space, they see something different from what others might. So, for example, a hallway with a row of lockers becomes an exhibit space; box trucks used to deliver newspapers become traveling studios.

“We’ve had a longstanding interest in thinking about mobile studios,” Kauder said, seeing “the opportunity with those lovely silver trucks.”

City-Wide Open Studios is celebrating its 15th year this year, and Kauder said a theme of this year’s exhibit will be the traditional 15th wedding anniversary gift of crystal, which Kauder said fits with the newspaper’s ideals of “transparency, clarity.”

The Alternative Space weekend has used several industrial buildings in the New Haven area, including the Pirelli building (in front of Ikea) and the Smoothie corset factory (now residences).
The Register building at 40 Sargent Drive was built in 1970 by Gant Shirtmakers on land that was reclaimed from New Haven Harbor. It was described by the late Elizabeth Mills Brown in her book “New Haven: A Guide to Architecture and Urban Design” as “landscaped, well-groomed and of inexpensive construction — the model modern, suburban factory.”

But the Gant factory closed just nine years later and the Register (as well as the former New Haven Journal-Courier) moved there from its longtime location at Orange and Audubon streets in 1981.

It was perfect for the Register at the time, because the publishers had planned to buy new presses and build an addition to house them that would have made Audubon Street a dead end. That plan angered the neighbors.
The Sargent Drive plant fit the newspaper well: executive offices in the front, the high rear section for the presses and the vast middle for the rest. The only drawback was its location by Interstate 95: good for visibility, not so good for visitors. Over time, though, the 200,000-square-foot plant has become far too large for the Register. Once it’s sold, the paper will move to a new location back downtown.

Before that, however, the arts community will bring the empty spaces to life for a weekend.

“This organization is such an important part of the arts community and we’re excited to be part of it this year,” said Connecticut Group Editor Matt DeRienzo. As the Register plans for its 200th anniversary celebration later this year, DeRienzo said it’s a great opportunity “to show off the space that has birthed so many editions of our newspaper over the past 30 years.”

If you're interested in exhibiting during City-Wide Open Studios' Alternative Space weekend, contact C.J. Randall at randallcj@comcast.net.

Wow! Our new news van certainly doesn’t lack for potential names.

So far, 21 of you have suggested more than three dozen names for the mobile news van we’ll be using to improve our news and sports coverage and to make it easier to connect with you, our readers.

Many of you were thinking along the same lines: Reggie (a nickname for Register) was a popular pick. Bill Day pointed out that Reggie harks back to Reggie Jackson, which in turn conjures up the Jackson Newspapers, the company that once owned us. Others who suggested Reggie were Mike Bilischko, who added “the News Van that can,” Julie Corrone, Joyce Bondos

Reggie? Rolling Register? Happenings? What name do you think would be best.

Another popular choice was a play on the word Rover: The Register Rover, the Roving Register, Register’s Roving Reporter. Adam Debernardi, Sheila Spera, Linda Leo and Melanie Petro were among those who wanted us to go roving. They may have gotten the idea from TC Rover, the Pioneer Press’ van that covers the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

There were several that had a casual air about them: "out and about newsvan" by Audrey McClure, Rolling Register and Register on the Move by Sally Hopkins, The Register’s News Cruise by Jane Snaider. Someone who didn’t leave their name offered Cruisin’ Newsroom. That last suggester also offered Special Delivery and Rolling Papers, adding “I’m guessing you're not going to use this one.” Yeah, you’re probably right about that.

The idea of speed and movement inspired Linda Krausz (Register Expressway, Register Bypass, Register on the Move), Ana Nieves-Winn (News on the Go!!) and Pam Landry (Register Dream Ride Express, Register Newsline Express, Register News to Go).

Marcia Kravitt thought Happenings was snappy, and Anita Bennett came up with Now.Here.Reporting, based on our initials, NHR.

We’ve got a lot to ponder, so keep the names coming. Maybe yours will be our choice!
We’re about to go on a roll at the Register.

Plans are under way for us to outfit a van as a mobile newsroom, which we can bring to breaking news events, football games, town fairs, anywhere. And we need a name for our rolling force of nature.

The van will have wifi, tables and chairs, maybe a coffee pot. Everything a roving journalist needs. You’ll be able to join us under the awning to talk to me or one of our reporters about how the Register is doing in covering your community, to get help setting up your own blog or to share a story idea.

The Register's mobile newsroom will be outfitted with wifi and a generator.

Of course, our reporters and photographers are out in the community every day. Certainly you’ve seen them if you go to a Town Council meeting or a ball game.

But we haven’t had a good way for you to sit down with us, to talk about how you think we’ve done, what you’d like to see us covering.

Once our van gets rolling, we’ll be able to park, put out the awning and set up shop on the go.

They’ve done this at our sister paper, the Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minn.. They call their van TC Rover. You can see photos of the van and its team at the Minnesota Vikings training camp in Mankato.

We’ll be outfitting the van in the next month, but to really get moving, we need a snappy name. Register on the Road? (Too much like Jack Kerouac.) Register Roadshow? Vincent? Then again, you probably have a better idea. Let us know! Give us a name … or five. Send your nominations—no limit—to voices@nhregister.com, or post them in the comments section below.

And we’ll see you on the road soon.
Have you seen Moe, the dog with the camera on his back? He’s the star of photographer Melanie Stengel’s new blog, Ruff Cuts.

Melanie has recruited Moe, her Basenji mix housemate, as collaborator and camera-pooch. Their “Tales of Greater New Haven” seen from a dog’s-eye view, is just one of the new blogs launched by New Haven Register staffers recently.

The blogs are pretty diverse. Moe, webcam attached to his back, will portray the New Haven area’s world of dogs “and maybe a few cats,” according to Stengel.

Another new blog is much more serious in tone.

Michelle Tuccitto Sullo, the Register’s investigations editor, has launched A Voice for Victims, which offers support and resources to those who have been victimized by crime or in some other way. Michelle, who recently reported about how convicts may apply for pardons without the knowledge of their victims, also runs the NHR Investigations blog.

There have been other blogs launched recently by our staff. There’s New Haven Eats by multimedia journalist Mara Lavitt, which focuses in pictures, video and text on a different city restaurant each week. East Haven and Branford reporter Jennifer Swift also recently started a blog, The East Haven & Branford Notebook, intended to increase conversation about the issues and events in those two shoreline towns.

Our staff-produced blogs, along with the dozens in our Community Media Lab, total more than 100 on subjects ranging from sports to family issues to politics. You can find them at www.nhregister.com/blogs.

If you have a blog you’d like to include in our media lab, or if you’d like to start one on a topic you’re passionate about, let me know. Email me at estannard@nhregister.com or call me at 203-789-5743.

And, as Stengel says in her introductory Ruff Cuts video, “If you want a camera dog with his paw on the pulse of the pet community, just say Moe.”
One of my major interests is nonprofit organizations, especially those serving the
poor and needy. It’s amazing how much great work they do, usually with small
staffs and relying heavily—sometimes exclusively—on volunteers.

I would love to showcase their work on nhregister.com, in our Community MediaLab and in other ways. The Journal Register Co. in Connecticut supports the
work of nonprofits in various ways, which you can see on the blog ConnecticutNewspapers.org.
I met Wednesday with Alison Cunningham, executive director of Columbus House,
as well as development director John Brooks. Columbus House is well known as a
homeless shelter on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard. What isn’t so widely known is the
variety of programs the agency conducts, including helping its clients find
housing and jobs and assisting those in early recovery from addictions. This
week I wrote a story about a new Community Support Volunteer Program, in which
volunteers will be paired with clients in supportive housing to spend time
together, helping to relieve the loneliness newly independent people often
feel. Contact information to volunteer is in my story.

The reason for our meeting was to talk about how Columbus House can increase
its outreach on the Web by starting a blog, which the Register will promote in
our media lab. We talked about the many stories Columbus House has to tell:
clients successfully given housing or a job and volunteers who come from faith
groups and other organizations to serve meals.

There are also numerous other organizations in Greater New Haven doing similar
work, all part of the Greater New Haven Regional Alliance to End Homelessness.

When people share resources and connections, great things happen. Columbus
House is in the midst of hiring a communications person (here’s the job description), who I hope to work with to launch a blog. And Alison agreed that
it would be great to have a “group blog” in which many organizations can
contribute.

I’m excited about these efforts. If you have any ideas or want to
start a blog for yourself or your group, please let me know! Email me at estannard@nhregister.com or call me at 203-789-5743.
A 'tidal wave of family fun' is coming your way Saturday, as the West River Watershed Partnership hosts its annual West River Water Festival from 1-4 p.m. at West River Memorial Park, corner of Ella T. Grasso Blvd and Route 34.

The day kicks off with a pre-festival cleanup in the park from 10 a.m. to noon; also in the West River for participants with a small watercraft.

Children and families can enjoy kiddie pools and sprinklers, mermaids reading story books, arts and crafts, pirate tales, water magic show, bike safety demonstration, games and educational activities.

"By involving young people from New Haven neighborhoods with their watershed, we hope to inspire them to pursue further education and perhaps resource conservation or scientific careers," said Doreen Abubakar, founder of the West River Watershed Partnership.

A companion event at the Barnard Nature Center will feature live sea and river animals, museum artifacts and objects such as animal skulls that kids will be able to touch.

Kayakers and canoeists are invited to bring your vessels and join in water exploration. If you love to walk, there will be a nature walk to the newly restored Duck Pond in nearby Edgewood Park.

Bird watchers will be able to catch views of herons, egrets, ospreys, cedar wax wings, woodpeckers and other birds.

If you go: The West River Watershed Partnership provided pictures for an online gallery from the 2011 festival, that we hope you will contribute your pictures to and help expand it to include the 2012 event.
The following letter, titled "A Forgotten Neighborhood -- Stevens Street, New Haven," was sent to Public Works Director John Prokop, Mayor John DeStefano Jr., other city officials and the news media. It is reprinted here with permission:

Dear Mr. Prokop,

For two weeks my and my neighbor's trash hasn't been picked up. I called your office yesterday and was assured it would be picked up. It wasn't. I called this morning and was assured it would be picked up. It hasn't been. It is the hottest day of the year and this is a hazard to all of the kids on our street. There are maggots and flies all around and the garbage is now spilling over. Would you please advise as to your plans? Also, if you have no plans to pick it up, who shall I send the invoice to so I can have it picked up by a company since your workers aren't doing their job? I won't be paying for this twice. Again, this is beyond disgusting and a hazard to the children.

This neighborhood has been forgotten about. Just this past weekend a 19 year old boy was struck down by a speeding car going in the wrong direction. There are drug deals going on. There are children out past midnight running up and down the street. There are nothing but children on our street and I won't let mine out because its simply not safe. Now, its not safe because even the air they breathe could be damaging because of the piling up of garbage and infestation that I was assured would be removed yesterday and then AGAIN, today. Further, I don't understand the escalation process for any of the departments in this city. When you don't receive an answer to a question or a problem, you're left to continue speaking with the same people who don't have the answers. In my experience that only comes from bad management. I'm not accusing, but will say that if you had properly trained individuals either addressing the issue or referring you to someone who can address it, my frustration wouldn't be at this level and quite possibly - just maybe - the issue would have been resolved. That comes from the top - down.

I believe in accountability. I will do my job as a citizen and you must do yours as an official. I ask you to reply all and advise of your plan.

Respectfully,
Catherine Lawson
Once the marchers arrive at City Hall, 165 Church St. they will reveal the findings of a door-to-door survey on the issues of jobs, education, public safety and neighborhood concerns.
These events are the first in a series of actions young people will be taking out of concern for the future for them and society as a whole.

It’s time to pay a visit to our Community Media Lab.
You might be surprised at who you’ll find.

Do have a loved one with autism? Do you care about increasing literacy among
our youth? Are you interested in sustainable farming? Our newest bloggers are
passionate about those topics.

Shirley Blaier-Stein has a son with autism. She left her career as a lawyer to
care for him, wrote a book called “Autism Mother,” and writes a blog called Autism Parents Community.
We’re thrilled to add her blog to our media lab, offering those who love people
with autism support and information.

It’s well known that literacy is vital to success in school and the job market.
The Literacy Coalition of Greater New Haven is a group of volunteers aiming to
increase the ability of both children and adults to read. If you’ve considered
volunteering to be a tutor, the Literacy Coalition is the place to call. And to
stay abreast of what the organization is doing, bookmark Literacy, Every Day.

Melissa Waldron runs the blog Fertile
Ground USA, whose motto is “Farming is a Transformative Act.” The site is
chock full of information about the sustainable-agriculture movement, including
urban farming.

Some of our other bloggers are promoting a cause. Actually, one, Christopher
Zurcher promotes several causes in three different blogs he maintains: PeaceNews, the Progress Action Roundtable and Connecticut Environmental Headlines.

And Zurcher is not the only environmental blogger. Others on our site include Green Cities, Blue
Waters from the Connecticut Fund for the Environment and Yale Environment 360 by the Yale School of Forestry
and Environmental Studies, as well as nature-oriented blogs such as Matthew
Houskeeper’s Soundbounder and
Nick Bonomo’s Shorebirder.

In politics, our bloggers read from left to right: Aldon Hynes’ Orient Lodge and Andrew Rose’s Political Insomniac, to name
two.

Our bloggers’ coverage enhances the news and features the Register’s reporters
bring you every day, and we’re always interested in adding local bloggers — or
helping you start a blog — who have a passion to share.

Sports. The Arts. Even a blog about Charles
Dickens movies. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find at www.nhregister.com/blogs.
